So, from 8th – 12th August my friends and I stayed in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe festival…and it was scrumptious
Round the corner from our house we roamed the most amazing street. The Royal Mile. It was alive with musicians and artists, actors and clowns. Everywhere we looked something jazzy was happening; our eyes couldn’t take everything in. Leaflets were showering from every angle, one man leapt out of nowhere with a majestic cry of ‘Laundry Boy’ and dropped a flyer into my hand, whereas on my other side a group of sightless zombies shifted low through the crowd, one shuddering hand reaching forward and offering me a leaflet.
We saw around 18 shows in the 5 days we were there…and for me the best of these were ‘Cheese Badger Presents…The Epic of Hairy Dave,’ ‘The Magical Faraway Tree’ by Sleeping Trees and ‘Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience’ A Parody by Dan and Jeff.
Sleeping Trees’ The Magic Faraway Tree. I’ve never seen the like. Three men dressed in sickening tops, stepped up on stage and eyed the audience, a little menace shining in their eyes. One said ‘Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the Magic Faraway Tree’ and all hell broke loose. The rambling tale was pocketed with strange and unexpected sub stories. The highlight of this piece I would say was the tremendous amount of gurning and generally awesome facial expressions. A slick quality of acting as well as cleverly planned scene changes made a three man show into a brilliant, eccentric, hilarious piece of theatre. I would love to see it again.

The epic of Hairy Dave (an hour long epic poem) was told to us by a spidery, bow-tied man who introduced himself as Sir Henry Cheese Badger and welcomed us with a handshake. Stood always by the side of the stage was his butler, Groger, glaring into space. What followed was an enthralling tale of a grandiose, hairy saviour rising from the sea to rid the world of unhealthy eating. The writings would have stood alone well, echoing works of Roald Dahl, but the earnest dramatisation and whimsical way it was delivered to us elevated the tale and kept spectators in suspense. Loved it so much we saw it twice and my friend got Sir Henry (Tom Ovens) to sign her Edinburgh book.

And finally, ‘Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience’ a Parody by Dan and Jeff. All 7 Potter books in 70 minutes. This show absolutely killed me with mirth; I got to a state where I felt like I really should not be out in public what with tears streaming down my face and whatnot. The thing that made this show so brilliant was that Dan and Jeff worked so very well together as a duo. Clearly good friends, both were confident enough to improvise and on occasion neither of them could stop themselves from spluttering. We saw this on the first day (and third day) of our trip and therefore throughout the trip had an extensive series of in-jokes from Potted, for example ‘lick my tongue chicken boy’ was an inspired improvisation when the magnificent dragon was supposed to be soaring majestically through the air…instead Dan had a hand puppet and was taunting Jeff, with shouts of ‘lick my tongue chicken boy.’ The silliness of the whole thing and great amount of audience interaction made a great experience.
