Die Not

Another study of my childhood imaginary friends, this time lying as thought they were in their grave.

Amelia is on the left and she has amber eyes because she traps people and keeps them suspended like insects in amber. Godene has a white film over her right eye – I’ve never known why as she would never tell me.

Paper Skin

I haven’t updates in 3 months. My reason for this – I was too freaked out by the new layout on wordpress to add anything.

But, a few months ago I painted a self-portrait of myself…it’s called ‘Paper Skin’ and is choc full of symbolism, so work it out – it’s a tasty puzzle for you to feast on.

Sadly the camera I used has made the quality not-so-good and highlights irritating points bleh. Enjoy anyhow!

Edinburgh Fringe 2011…wizards, trees and lots and lots of hair.

So, from 8th – 12th August my friends and I stayed in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe festival…and it was scrumptious

Round the corner from our house we roamed the most amazing street. The Royal Mile. It was alive with musicians and artists, actors and clowns. Everywhere we looked something jazzy was happening; our eyes couldn’t take everything in.  Leaflets were showering from every angle, one man leapt out of nowhere with a majestic cry of ‘Laundry Boy’ and dropped a flyer into my hand, whereas on my other side a group of sightless zombies shifted low through the crowd, one shuddering hand reaching forward and offering me a leaflet.

We saw around 18 shows in the 5 days we were there…and for me the best of these were ‘Cheese Badger Presents…The Epic of Hairy Dave,’ ‘The Magical Faraway Tree’ by Sleeping Trees and ‘Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience’ A Parody by Dan and Jeff.

Sleeping Trees’ The Magic Faraway Tree. I’ve never seen the like. Three men dressed in sickening tops, stepped up on stage and eyed the audience, a little menace shining in their eyes. One said ‘Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the Magic Faraway Tree’ and all hell broke loose. The rambling tale was pocketed with strange and unexpected sub stories. The highlight of this piece I would say was the tremendous amount of gurning and generally awesome facial expressions. A slick quality of acting as well as cleverly planned scene changes made a three man show into a brilliant, eccentric, hilarious piece of theatre. I would love to see it again.

The epic of Hairy Dave (an hour long epic poem) was told to us by a spidery, bow-tied man who introduced himself as Sir Henry Cheese Badger and welcomed us with a handshake. Stood always by the side of the stage was his butler, Groger, glaring into space. What followed was an enthralling tale of a grandiose, hairy saviour rising from the sea to rid the world of unhealthy eating. The writings would have stood alone well, echoing works of Roald Dahl, but the earnest dramatisation and whimsical way it was delivered to us elevated the tale and kept spectators in suspense. Loved it so much we saw it twice and my friend got Sir Henry (Tom Ovens) to sign her Edinburgh book.

And finally, ‘Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience’ a Parody by Dan and Jeff. All 7 Potter books in 70 minutes. This show absolutely killed me with mirth; I got to a state where I felt like I really should not be out in public what with tears streaming down my face and whatnot. The thing that made this show so brilliant was that Dan and Jeff worked so very well together as a duo. Clearly good friends, both were confident enough to improvise and on occasion neither of them could stop themselves from spluttering. We saw this on the first day (and third day) of our trip and therefore throughout the trip had an extensive series of in-jokes from Potted, for example ‘lick my tongue chicken boy’ was an inspired improvisation when the magnificent dragon  was supposed to be soaring majestically through the air…instead Dan had a hand puppet and was taunting Jeff, with shouts of ‘lick my tongue chicken boy.’ The silliness of the whole thing and great amount of audience interaction made a great experience.

There you have it, some highlights of my Edinburgh experience. LOVED IT

Games

A couple of weeks ago I painted a new self portrait!

I mostly base paintings on my face purely because it’s easiest – I study my face every day when getting ready…and also noone else will pose for me! Haaa

I called it ‘Games’ for many many reasons, my mind has been filled with thoughts recently – it hurts.

Enjoy…:)

Nisha Haq is hawt.

A raw talent, Nisha Haq dabbles in music, fashion, photography and generally being awesome!

Not only does Nisha have a stunningly beautiful and quirky voice, but she’s magic with her camera! Her picture’s usually concentrate on capturing the essence of emotion, and zeal, specializing in portraiture, fashion and concept. Every new shoot, there’s a feeling she gives, whether through the calm and delicate expression, or through the striking poses and bright colours. Her recent ‘Hot Seat’ series is particularly interesting, probing into the lives and minds of a range of different people, reminding me of Andy Warhol’s video’s in which he would set up a camera and ask a person to just sit for ten minutes, doing nothing in particular. Nisha has also done a lot of statement-making shockers! Her identity series is both disturbing and thought-provoking, dealing with controversial issues, as well as exploring her own identity and personality (which, by the way, is awesome)

So Nisha is haaawt stuff, go visit her blog http://mashthings.blogspot.com/ go visit her flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/mashnashphotography/ and have a damn good time!

My my

Here’s the story that took place only last night! (30th April 2011):

I was highly inspired by artwork in Severn Vale Art Trail, and felt the need to paint a new selfportrait, using turpentine to water down the oil paints and create a new drizzled effect. Little did I know…turpentine is toxic!! and highly flammable, not that I was planning to light a fire particularly. I knew that, were a person to breathe in a little bit it wouldn’t do much harm. Hoooooowever, I sat in my room for about 6-7 hours, until midnight. All the while toxic turpentine fumes rose and flooded my bedroom and I’d left no window or door open. So at midnight, when my self portrait was virtually finished, my mother came in, to wish me good night and quickly her tone changed and she screached

“What is that smell?!” I looked up nonplussed and told her that it was just a bit of turpentine. She went on to tell me that I had poisoned my room and ordered me to take a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor of my sister’s room.

So that is the story of this painting :) In fact I could argue that I nearly died for this selfportrait, if I was being melodramatic.
